Biography

Amélie Ducommun is a Franco-Swiss artist born in 1983, graduated from « ‘L’Ecole des Arts Décoratifs de Paris » (ENSAD) and from the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona.

At 36, she has already achieved more than 100 exhibitions around the world (France, Spain, USA, China, Italy, Switzerland, United Arab Emirates, Germany, Canada, Brazil, Portugal ...) and has participated in various fairs art (Art Miami, FIAC, Art Central Hong-Kong, Art Elysée, Art Madrid, Art Stage Jakarta, Estampa, Art Shenzhen, Just MAD ...) and biennial (Beijing, Dakar…).

In 2009, after graduating from « ‘L’Ecole des Arts Décoratifs de Paris » (ENSAD), Amélie passed the competition of the « Academie des Beaux Arts » to represent French painting in Spain for two years at the Casa de Velázquez;

During these two years she has produced and exhibited in numerous exhibitions and galleries her works on "Landscapes in movement" and "Landscapes Furtivos".

After these two years in Spain, she was invited by the Miro Foundation in Mallorca in 2011 to produce works that interact with the landscape of the island in Joan Miro's Summer Studio.

She worked on the streams for 4 months and two of her works were acquired and are exhibited by the Foundation, "El Rio Negro" and "El Rio Rojo".

She will be the same year  the winner of the "Georges Wildenstein Prize".

Amélie Ducommun was selected to represent France during the 9th Francophone Games (painting) in Nice where she won the silver medal. (2013)

In 2014, she was invited to celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations between France and China through numerous exhibitions in China (Beijing, Shanghai, etc.).

Since 2015, she has exhibited her work worldwide, with different galleries that represent her work.

Amélie Ducommun has almost always painted, nature has always captivated her and has inspired her works.

The origin of her work lies mainly in questioning memories, the perception of the landscape and the interrelation of natural elements.

Each light of a country, of a place offers a particular harmony.

She seeks, discovers, apprehends this light in each place.

It is in this sense that she likes to travel, to find her first impression on things.

Her work tells us about nature, water in particular and memory.

She likes to find her first feeling, the feeling that the landscape she encountered expresses a truth.

With this need in her work to arrive at a neutral or virgin place where everything must be felt for her for the first time.

She always walks on foot in the landscapes she crosses, because it is by walking that one enters the thickness of the landscape. In her work, there is always a back and forth between the outside and the inside of her studio.

The exterior where she is inspired and the interior of her studio where she comes to repaint her emotions her "memories" in successive transparent layers on the surface of her canvas.

Her paintings are memory cards of places crossed.

Old memories rub shoulders with new ones.

There is a loss of scale in her painting as in her memory, she says, the hierarchy of memories becomes emotional.

She likes to paint an impression on things in its entirety, without forgetting its details, hence this permanent oscillation in her painting between microscopic mink and macroscopic mink.

We get lost to find our way around better, she says ...

We see aerial visions and at the same time details of rocks, elements ...

Accumulate memories to not forget them, to not forget this first feeling about things .... because it is in these moments of intense reaction to the landscape that we have the impression of having lived

This experience started 15 years ago in front of the immense spectacle of the Atlantic Ocean...

"15 years ago, she decided to settle alone on the island of Ouessant, a year to live something else to get away from her daily life, to give herself time to see, to observe nature.

On this small island where the natural elements are powerful sometimes they are unleashed especially the winters ...

Amélie Ducommun settles there without looking for something to draw, unlike her previous travel habit, she lets herself be taken in by nature by what she gives her to see and feel ... and to see what she takes away from it.

There is an important element in his work, always, which is « the let go ».

She thinks that in this place where nature is so beautiful, there is bound to be something going on ...

So much so that she tries a still trip there, choosing a few square meters from Penn Arland beach choosing the space of the surf where the waves break on the foreshore.

Some people sometimes choose to take a sabbatical year to travel, she chooses a year of immobility to learn to see ...

With each wave come to print on the ground forms, imprints which are taken again automatically by the sea the next second.

The memory of water is left by more or less ephemeral footprints on other elements. The earth, the rock, the wind are the memories of these flows.

This year Amélie produced a series: "Estran".

Composed of a hundred pieces that speak of the part of the beach, constantly covered and discovered by the tide. A space in constant evolution, in perpetual movement.

The observation of this nature, the desire to copy as close as possible to the elements, this desire to understand, to observe, gives her the desire to paint in a movement a similar process, so she decides to not to forget this first impression on things, and to paint as in memory an accumulation of memories that intertwine with each other.

There is also in her work this fear of forgetting, this desire not to lose what we have fully experienced.

This motionless trip to Ouessant made her want to continue on other sites, often aquatic, such as the river beds, snow-capped mountains, rivers, ponds ... this incredible experience of emotional interaction with the landscape.

It is moreover an emotional experience that takes precedence in her work, rather than transcribing a reality, it is not to forget and let the "memories" be written on the surface of the canvas in their emotional importance.

The value is the emotional feeling of what we experienced for Amélie Ducommun.

Therefore, moving from place to place, she always seeks the feeling of emotional interaction at the places encountered.

The trip allows her to create discovery, unlike the everyday which locks us in comfort and technical familiarity.

Her work over the past fifteen years has been carried out in Spain, France and Switzerland

The movement became synonymous with life for her and she decided to focus her research there during these fifteen years.

During her two-year residency at the “Casa de Velázquez” and then from the residency at the Miro foundation, she moved constantly through Spanish landscapes to produce two series “Landscapes in movement” and “Landscapes Furtivos ".

She worked in Extremadura, in La Mancha and in the surroundings of Madrid "Pedriza", always around rivers or lakes. These works are the fruit of research on rivers and streams, they speak of the imprints of two elements: water and stone.

From 2014 to 2015, she produced series between Aude in France and Barcelona (Catalonia) where she lives and works mainly on the musicality of painting.

She explored the colorful sounds with muted tones caused by the rustle of air on the water.

Amélie decided to penetrate the surface of the water, to dive, to imagine the bottom of these movements and aquatic noises.

Since 2017, she has been working on the relationship between memories, water and landscapes from her two studios in Barcelona in Spain and Aude in France.

She worked mainly on two series "Sensitive Water Mapping" and "Unfolding Memories", then on a series speaking more about aquatic gardens "Longevity's Garden", as well as on a museum installation project "Walking in memories" which is an immersion in her memory.

In our world where everything is so fast and hectic, I would like to focus on the things that matter, we have lost sight of what is important.

I think that my work now has a particular resonance because there is a lack of poetry, of coherence evident in our time.

It is an ode to grandiose spectacles with the natural elements that surround us and to the grandiose spectacles that they show us, this miracle of life.

There is a lack of cloudiness, gray areas.

We have to have an opinion on everything and all the time.

We constantly have to choose sides

And that must be a clear opinion,  a crystal clear one : it is bad or it is good, it is a yes it is a no.

There are no more gray areas.

The collective memory is erased in favor of individualism and immediacy, the relationship to the past is altered,

Everyone says they want to reconnect with nature, but no one does it intellectually or spiritually.

We even forget the exploits of this nature by trying to surpass it.

It's been like that since I was born and I find that the principle of memory is collapsing.

The memories or the elements that bring us back to the past are very short-lived.

It's a photo, a video, a text message, it's something we can't discuss because it doesn't leave room for discussion or uncertainty.

There is no mixing, you have to see what is shown to you, hear what is playing and believe it.

I hope that my work allows us to take us back to the poetry that lives in us, to bring back and to revive this part of memories which is nebulous, this part of our feelings and our sensations which are not as clear cut as our time tries to persuade us.

It is precisely these natural, grandiose and so essential elements that can bring us back this poetry, for that it is enough just to remember.
